Today evening, as I was leaving office, I was prompted that I had a system update to be installed and whether I wanted to install it then or later. I was reading a message and I pressed the back button inadvertently dismissing the update message.
A lot of background data processing was happening all day and the charge had dropped well below 15% and I was constantly getting a reminder to connect my charger. However, it kept slipping my mind and even then, during the update prompt, I didn’t realize that I was running short of charge.
Anyway, I got back home in some time and then I again was presented the prompt to update the phone software. This time I blindly accepted the update and I kept the phone down while it switched off and tool a really long time updating. Every time I see that update screen, I get the goose bumps, since it was one of those updates that once bricked my phone when I first bought my G1. This time, the update seemed to go on for a very long time. However, I kept my faith and after 3-4 glances, I left it as it is and did something by myself.
Then the phone vibrated signaling that it was rebooting and I saw the android boot up screen. I waited a while more till the phone started up completely and it was then what I saw almost brought my heart popping out of my mouth. The battery was just about dead and it was blinking with a red cross. The charge would have well been around 1-2% and I was oh so glad that the battery lasted long enough for the update to go through successfully. If the battery had died while the update was happening (and the update is a pretty intensive process if I am guessing right) then I am afraid I would be staring at another dead phone. Probably not a brick (since I would still have the SPL to save me) but a couple of sleepless nights nevertheless and I would well have been too scared to have tried and recovered the phone.
Thankfully the update went through well and I had the pleasure of looking at some real good changes on the 1.6 update which was installed as will be detailed in the next post.
