I had seen this video long back and it was very inspirational to be back then. Yesterday, a colleague forwarded me link to the speech given by a Google employee Marissa Mayer as the commencement address in the Illinois Institue of Technology. I don’t know what position this lady holds in Google, but I understood from the speech that she was among the first few employees in Google. Anyway, getting back to the point, seeing this video reminded me of the Commencement Address given by Steve Jobs and I wanted to see that again.
So I ’youtubed’ for it and got the video and saw it all over again. It is truely one of the most amazing and inspiring speeches that I have heard. There have been other speeches that have been claimed to be extremely inspiring, such as the last lecture by professor Randy Pausch and few others, but somehow I found a lot of emotional material there rather than something inspiring. Take a look at the video below, before proceeding any further and then read my comments on the video and some learnings that I want to takeaway.
Although Jobs talks about his cancer and death and other factors that could conjure up feelings of emotion, his principles are strictly detached from emotion. He takes a real hard stand on these emotive feelings and shows how one should not let such things affect what one wants. Most other inspirational videos uses emotion to compell one to do something, which of course will help in the self development of oneself. But such emotional speeches showing pain, distress and bad things in life always puts me off. This speech by Jobs is about happyness and how sad incidents should not affect you from achieving those happy moments.
From this speech, I now have more takeaways than when I had seen this before. To sum up what he says, ‘one must live his own life and not live the life of others. One must do what interests him/her and have the faith that it will be the correct decision. Somehow ones intuition already knows that one is doing the correct thing’
I need to follow this and go ahead and do those things that I want to do. I have to make time for myself and live my dreams and live my life.
