American/European Breakfasts

I might be wrong in classifying these as American or European breakfasts, but thats how I know it. I love this kind of breakfast and I can have only these day in and day out and for days and days together. I get bored very soon of the typical Indian breakfasts – Dosa, Idly, Chapatti [...]

Analysing Harry Potter Book 7

I’ve read only the first 50 odd pages of the book as yet and the 7th book, as much as I hate saying it, is very much put-down-able.

Somehow this edition of HP doesnt have the bite in it. The 6th book was truly amazing. I just couldnt stop reading that book. The 7th book somehow [...]

Upgrade of Ubuntu causes errors

I had decided to upgrade ubuntu to the latest version. Unfortunately it only upgrades to the next version. So I had to upgrade my 6.06 to 6.10 and then upgrade 6.10 to 7.04. Now since 6.06 is a LTS version (i.e Long Term Support), it wouldn’t upgrade to the next distro by default and would only upgrade the packages. So I had to use the command line to force a distro upgrade whereas I could normally use the Update Manager in System->Administration.

The command to upgrade, which can be typed from the Run(Alt+F2) window is (including the quotes)

ADMTek Modem causes Problem in Linux

The ADMTek AN983 is one of the most popular LAN cards that you get in the Indian markets. The main reason to which it would owe this popularity is the low pricing. I bought this card because it was around half the price of the other card in the market which was a D-link card. The chipset is the same D-link/linksys chipset and only the manufacturer is different. At least that what I used to think until some days back.

Ubuntu Installation and Troubleshooting

My journey with Ubuntu definitely started off on the wrong foot. I had decided to install Ubuntu over openSUSE as firstly I had downloaded the installation DVD and secondly I read some article about openSUSE becoming commercialised. Not the way that I was heading for with my first linux installation. I had also taken this interesting test to determine which linux distro was ideal for me where openSUSE and Ubuntu reigned supreme.

Development Plans

I have lost quite a bit of touch with programming and scripting languages over the past couple of years. Since I do all my coding in ABAP, I have not touched languages like java and C except for some rare situations where I was maybe experimenting with some features either for me or for a friend. So I decided to get back to programming and learning languages and technologies.

Change my Hosting provider

My first step was to have my own website so that I can start creating PHP/AJAX/RoR/Perl and whatnot pages and see how they work. So I decided to start searching for a webhost. I was previously hosted with squarebrothers. But I had to change after their servers crashed one day and all my data was lost and the subsequent customer helpdesk was apalling. I decided that their service was worthless and decided not to renew my subscription with them.

Choosing a Linux Distro

One thing that I wanted to do was to install linux on my box and finally start using it. Over the course of the last 10 years, I have been installing linux and then using it for some trivial purposes and then deleting the partition to free up space for windows. I started of my journey with RHL 6.2 and subsequently have installed various versions of RHL, SUSE, Mandrake(not Mandriva), Slackware, Caldera, PCQLinux(:P) and Fedora even. Of course I have never stuck to any one in particular. This time I decided to try Ubuntu.

A big boo boo?

We were at V’s house discussing about whether her sis wants to do an MBA or not and why she should do it. Then the results of my CAT exam struck me.

I had got 97 percentile and I had not got any calls from any of the IIMs. A few friends later got calls [...]
