Continuing with my earlier posts about things falling and not falling into place. One thing that I had forgotten to mention was that all game downloads would not contribute to download limit. Only online/multiplayer gaming would count toward the limit. That got me even more excited, now I can download and play games like mad and it wont be counted to the limit at all. The best part is that since it doesnt count to limit I can download in the day time when the speeds are the maximum.
And yesterday I went back home and again tried to connect and it didnt work, the site didnt open. After the short walk I came back and tried and the site opened but again the problem with the appplication not getting past the firewall. The best part is that there are about 6-7 different pages on the indiagames site on how to configure the firewall to allow their client to access their network and each of those pages list 3-4 different IPs to configure. Finally my Zonealarm has about 10-15 IPs which have been given permission to transfer data to and from my comp. I dont know if the new set of IPs from yesterday worked or it was because I got irritated and shutdown my Zonealarm, but finally it did connect to the server and started downloading. And it continued to download even after I turned the firewall back on after some initial hiccups. I dont really care coz finally I got the damn thing working and I already downloaded 3 games on it.
I started off with Chessmaster Challenge which was a small 18mb download. Then I did an Age of Mythology – Titans which was around 900 megs and then Rise of Nations which was about 600 megs. I averaged download speeds of around 250 kbps and even maxed to a speed of 500+ kbps at times.
In a period of about 3-4 hours which included on and off downloads intermittent with some gaming action I downloaded around 2.5 gigs yesterday. Now thats cool. More games to come my way today evening including games such as Toca Race Driver 2 and Colin McRae Rally 2005. The interesting part is that these games can be played only using the Indiagames GoD player for which you have to initially connect to the internet and their site. Once you launch the game I dont think there is any problem if you disconnect the network (gotta test that today), and anyway there should be minimal data transfer if you are playing single player. The games come packaged as a single file in some wierd format, so it shouldnt be possible to pirate unless someone is able to identify the packaged format. This way the interests of the game publishers are also protected. But its also gonna cause me defragmentation nightmares. Imagine a single file spanning 1gb residing on my HDD. Nuts.
Think about it, 200 bucks a month and you have unlimited gaming action. And the best part is the games are fully legal and you can even play online without fear. This is the bestest thing that has happened to India and to the Indian gamers and to the Gaming Industry in general. Woot…. I’m taken.
